Has the credit Crunch and Black history Month –Any connectons?
Is Blach history month worth celebrationg?
There has been soo much noise about the credit crunch. Well who is being crunched. The real people who are being crunched are not even aware of the fact that they are being crunched.
Has the credit crunch got relation to our history. October is supposed to be black history month. I am trying to think aloud here and i am also trying to compare the present day economic state of black nations. Can we draw any relationship between the current meltdown of the capitalist economic foundations and the dire economic state of black nations around the world.
Is Black History Month worth Celebrating?
One side of my brain says No
To me, one side of my head tell me that it is ridiculous to have a month dedicated to black people and call it black history month. This is based on the following questions that my brain is asking and i am trying to find answers to:
• What is to happen during the 11 of the 12 months?
• Is the world supposed to forget about black history or are black people not supposed to celebrate their history?
Are we saying that black people and the world should only celebrate and appreciate the struggle of black people in only a single month. And oh by the way why was October chosen. I don’t know. Maybe i should read more about it.
At least it could have been slated for the summer time. At least then you know you are going to get some black people going out in the summer and being pro active. What a blanket generalisation? It is a fact though, you are bound to get more people to attend talks and workshops etc during summertime. Not during October. I still don’t know the difference between spring and autumn. Any time without the sun is called winter to me. So based on my fragile knowledge of meteorology just allow me to say why black history month during winter.
I bet there are good reasons. I am still finding the good reasons.
The Main question at stake is. Is Black HIstory Month worth Celebration?
One side of my brains says YES
The other side of my brain is also saying, COME ON!!! You need black history month. That side of my brain is asking me, ‘Well don’t you think that at least having a month dedicated to black history month will yield alot of positives.
What are some of these positive to be derived from this month?
A dedicated month when all efforts can be highlighted? That is to say that people can show the world and learn from each other what they have learnt about black history in the month of October. I don’t think that is a bad idea. Actually, individuals and small organisations who are normally at the forefront of such issues will be able to get the widest coverage over a particular month.
What do i think about black history month.
I think that i have learnt alot based on the fact that there is black history month. Not because someone has come to me to teach me. Although i enjoy reading about history in general with special affinity or should I say bias towards black history, I have always learnt more or made more effort in October. Just that there is a month called black history month forces me to do some more work on my history and hopefully try share it with those who are interested.
But well don’t be surprised if i tell you that more of my firends will be watching prison break rather than listen to ‘boring’ black history.
What have i learnt this period?
I have actually been doing more this year about learning more than any other year. I am actually reading more from reliable sources from the internet instead of buying books. A very cheap and effective way of doing it if you have access to the internet.
From my readings, I realised that alot of the things called black history are still evident in todays world, be it positive or negative. The only fact is that, i was unaware of the detailed information and the inter-relationship of these issues. I would not say i am naive, but some of the information i have been researching over the last few weeks have been interesting.
Ok i will start talking about some of the little things i have read or learnt.
Nubians
Although i know i am a Nubian now, i really never associated with this word so much. I currently associate with it more after understanding the origins of the Nubian people. Did you know that there were Nubian kingdoms that strectch and covered large lands of Africa with major influences in world trade and politics? Have you heard of the name Cush?? Well find about who a Cushite is.
If you want an introductory on this maybe you could look at

Slavery
After reading about about the Nubians i decided to start reading more about slavery. Well what a coincidence. I am sitting write and listening and got a Ghanaian radio on (21:55) and guess what song they are playing- Lucky Dube – I am a slave. Damn. This is like a trip and i don’t know where i even stand. That is my view of the black story cos sometimes i feel i am totally liberated and other times i am actually thinking i am a slave. Anyways. Back to my point.
My knowledge about slavery is about the wishy washy information i was given by the education system in Ghana. About we have slave castles. They are tourist attractions etc. There was no real human connection established as far as i remember about that memento of history on my motherland.
I am understanding things better now. I am not trying to look at the past, i am thinking about moving forward and moving ahead. We black people need to be progressive and really stand with our instincts. Most people know about the incident of Craig Cox saying ‘Bring Slavery Back’ on an NUS platform. Well he is banned now by the NUS. That occurrence made me realise that the issue of slavery is still present. Be it an emotional scar etched into the bone marrows of black people or its manifestation as relics/tourist attractions on our lands. I will not go into the fact that this immoral act never being resolved officially through the courts or justice or just for political correctness -An open apology from the british government (to say the least). Tony Blair officially put it on record by inference that, he and the british government was not ready to apologise.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/6185176.stm
Now let us get real. The nearest closest to an apology was to issue ‘A statement of regret’. There is a gigantuan difference between an apology and a regret. Bluntly put, a regret is legally not admission of guilt. An apology is an admission of guilt. I am not a law guru but i think it is as plain as calico on a black face. Very graphic i know.
Now, i hear some people of all colours who say, it is history so deal with it. Forget about it. How can we forget about this. That was never said about the holocaust. Can you say forget about the holocaust? So why do we have to forget about slavery. I don’t mean black people. I mean the world.
Some also say, well black people were involved. Well, the starting point is that, it is crystal clear that no black nation benefited from slavery. It is that simple. So let us forget about some black people selling slaves etc.
Let me give you parallel analogies and let us comment on this issue.
Logic 1
Osama is a terrorist because he kills. That is just based on killing is bad and not killing is good. Does that make his countries of origin; Saudi Arabia and Yemen terrorist states? No!!! This is mainly because he is not working in under the instruction or using the government instruments of those two countries.
Logic 2
Hitler is a bad man in the eyes of the moral and rational man. Germany is not blamed today for the actions of his actions. Germany still however, takes responsibility for the actions of Hitler against the jews. The only reason why they do so, is because he was using the instruments of the state of germany to achieve his goal.
Logic 3
Now take slavery and reason for yourself. You will see that, this trade has the same characteristics (ie persecution of a particular group of people). The only difference is that, Slavery was bigger and more black slaves died than jews in the holocaust. Read in between the lines
Just watch this documentary and do your research

The World Economy and The Credit Crunch
Well is there anything that we can learn from the credit crunch. Well just for your information. The economic super powers have been built with our toil, sweat and blood according to history. It is a fact. Our modern day capitalist super economies in the west have their foundations laid down and built by the slave trade http://www.minoritystudents.co.uk/node/852 , colonisation and in present day – the blatant exploitation of black people, the flagrant disregard for our human rights , application of any policies or support of illegal regimes in our black nations to loot our natural the natural resources. Read about about mobutu and US government
I hear the world is economy is collapsing. America has made it clear that it is willing to find 700 billion dollars to bail Wall Street or as i call it Balls Street. In short, the point here is this;
Would the west pay 700 billion to save the lives of black nations. The answer is straight no. So we all know where priorities lie.
October is a month to share ideas and to be real. Forget about nationalities and see your next man as just a black man and not Nigerian, Ghanaian, black American, Black British. We need to love one another and build on our strengths and support each other.
It is simple black history is not dead. We see it in the streets and it is happening in our lives. Obamania etc. The struggle continues. Compare the economic and political power of your country to any western state.
Well after writing this, i feel relieved to have been able to share what i have learnt during this black history month. Well it is for this knowledge i have gained that that makes me think that black history month is a good thing. For, i know if it were not to be for black history month, i would not be having the knowledge i acquired through researching and i wont be sharing it now.
The next question is this. Are we allowed to share what we think as and what we see as black people without being labelled as radicals of some sort. I mean i hope my white friend do not see me as some anti-white dude. I just have to say how i say the world in my eyes. The issues are basic and simple. The world has to deal with it and no one will deal with it for us but us.
Bless
